Capsule Geology

The Road occurrence is located on the north side of Rupert Inlet and immediately east of the Island Copper (MINFILE 092L 158) mine pit.

The region is underlain by northwest-trending belts of Upper Triassic volcanic rocks and sediments of the Karmutsen and Quatsino formations (Vancouver Group) and Lower Jurassic Bonanza Group volcanic rocks and sediments. These rocks have been intruded by stocks of the Jurassic Island Plutonic Suite.

Locally pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and molybdenite occur in quartz stringers and as disseminations in silicified wallrock. Hostrocks consist of silicified andesitic flows, tuffs and breccias of the Bonanza Group. Quartz feldspar porphyry intrudes the rocks. For detailed description of similar geology refer to the Island Copper deposit (MINFILE 092L 158).

In 1992, a drillhole (D-181) yielded 0.50 per cent copper over 71.6 metres (266.7 to 338.3 metres down hole), including 1.08 per cent copper, 0.095 per cent molybdenum and 0.92 gram per tonne gold over 1.5 metres (300.2 to 301.7 metres down hole; Assessment Report 22949).

Work History

The area has been explored in conjunction with the nearby Island Copper (MINFILE 092L 158) mine and a complete regional exploration history can be found there. During the 1960s through 1980s, BHP-Utah Mines completed programs of geological mapping, geochemical sampling, airborne and ground geophysical surveys and diamond drilling on the area. In 1992, BHP Minerals Canada Ltd. completed a single diamond drillhole, totalling 356.0 metres, on the Road 1 claim.
